What We Do

Home Building

MSC Home Repair Ministry began in 2014 when the Amish young adults from Indiana and Pennsylvania came to replace roofs and build porches and ramps.  Their annual volunteers, three crews per year, provide the free labor for disabled, elderly, widowed, veterans and handicapped clients here.  The history of providing safety, sanitary, health and disaster repairs in Noxubee County goes back to 1975 when the Mennonite Voluntary Service Unit workers installed bathrooms and built new houses.  This effort was called Partners Toolbox.  Over the years, Mashulaville Dormitory has been a noted resource for household repair needs.  Mennonite Service Center (MSC) recruits, schedules, hosts and directs necessary volunteers.  Homeowners request assistance and agree to provide the materials.  In 2019, 8 roof jobs, 10 porch/ramps, 7 bathroom upgrades, 3 demolitions, 5 painting of dwellings, 2 water lines, and numerous assessments and maintenance tasks were completed.

MSC receives no funding but accepts donations of time, materials and money to support the work.

Summer Meals

The Summer Feeding Program began about 18 years ago in memory of the late Sarah Miller (Larry's mother) after the closing of the Mashulaville Community Center. This is where the inspiration came from in her memory serving the community with low income childcare services and meals to needy children. Our program has now expanded to 22 different locations providing meals through the summer months and after school tutoring services to over 1200 children daily under the age of 18 and disabled individuals. This program operates out of the budget of Mennonite Service Center which is solely funded from donations and then reimbursed per meal by the USDA Feeding Program. No other monetary grants or state funds are provided for the operation of this program. Our program offers services to many areas within the community including Community Counseling, local faith based organizations, and other community centers throughout Noxubee, Winston, and Lowndes counties. This program provides these local children with a breakfast and lunch weekly Monday through Friday during the summer months and snack and supper during the months of school operation. Daily we provide these children with recreation activities, bible study, praise and worship, and skill-building techniques for survival in today's society.

Elderly Meals

The Mashulaville/Macon area has many elderly residents, disabled people and veterans. Each week MSC provides a hot meal for them. An average of 80 plates are delivered each Thursday. The recipients greatly appreciate the food! We rely on food donations and monetary donations for this program. If your group would like to help with this, please let us know.

Blankets

Thursdays are comforter knotting days at Mashulaville Dormitory. This group of local women made 75 warm, colorful blankets for nursing homes and the American Red Cross this year. Using donations of quilting blocks, batting and recycled fabric, the creations are works of art and the means of warmth for needy persons.

Education

Over the years, education and tutoring have been a priority at MSC. From after-school tutoring to GED classes, many students have been helped to succeed in furthering their education. As with many non-profit organizations, volunteers are always in short supply. If you have an interest in helping with any of our education classes, please contact us!
